The New York Philharmonic last week released the programme for their coming Biennial in 2016.
Described as a ”Three-week Exploration of Today’s Music Presented by the New York Philharmonic, and Twelve Partners In Eight Venues Throughout New York City” the series is set to be a bold and exciting event championing and presenting cutting edge music.
Among the names presented at the Biennial many are from the Music Sales catalogue such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kaija Saariaho, John Corigliano, Nico Muhly, Missy Mazzoli, Per Nørgård and David Lang to mention a few.
The Biennial takes place from May 23 until the June 11 with two final concerts on 10 and 11 including the New York premiere of Corigliano’s Conjurer Concerto for percussion (on 10). On May 11 The NY Phil and conductor Alan Gilbert will focus on the work of Nordic composers as they give the world premiere of a new piece by Marie-Josée Kravis Composer in Residence, Esa-Pekka Salonen and the US premiere of Per Nørgård’s Symphony No. 8. Per Nørgård was the second recipient of the Marie-Josée Kravis Prize for New Music at the New York Philharmonic.
Per Nørgård’s Symphony No. 8 was recently celebrated at the Gramophone Awards in London this August with the award for Best Contemporary Recording going to the Vienna Philharmonic’s performance of Nørgård’s Symphonies No. 1 and No.8 under the baton of Sakari Oramo.
