Christopher Wheeldon’s highly praised ballet adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale with music by Joby Talbot returns to the Royal Opera House on April 12. Premiered by The Royal Ballet in 2014, The Winter’s Tale built on the success of Wheeldon and Talbot’s earlier partnership on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Judith Mackrell, writing in The Guardian, said ‘Winter's Tale is one of the most fully achieved story ballets to be created at the Royal Ballet in years’ and Katherine Colombus noted in The Stage that ‘Joby Talbot’s specially-commissioned new score is masterful.’
The story follows the destruction of a marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet, through remorse and regret – and after a statue of Hermione appears to come miraculously to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation. With powerful designs by Bob Crowley and atmospheric music by Joby Talbot, The Winter’s Tale is a masterful modern narrative ballet.
Tom Seligman and David Briskin will share conducting duties over the course of the production’s run which will conclude on June 10.
