The Handmaid's Tale is set in the Republic of Gilead, a bible based dictatorship ruled by right-wing Christian fundamentalists. In this highly patriarchal society, women are bereft their rights and placed into a rigid class system. Women who are fertile and live in “sin” or second marriages, are forcibly separated from their families and sent to indoctrination centres lead by “Aunts”. Here women are given the status as “Handmaids”, and sent off to selected childless households in order to get ritually impregnated.
