Written as a tribute to Sir William Glock
Programme Note
Composed in homage to William Glock, this single movement has something of the character of a slow fugue, on a theme deeply imbued with minor thirds. The woodwinds and strings are considered as pairs, in balance with each other and with the piano.
UNBROKEN CIRCLE (1984) was first performed by the London Sinfonietta conducted by Diego Masson at a private concert on June 1st 1984 during the Bath Festival. It was written as a tribute to Sir William Glock, who retired that year after 10 years as Director of the Bath Festival.
The first public performance of Unbroken Circle was by The Fires of London, conducted by the composer, at La Maison de la Culture Rennes, on 30th November 1984.
