Programme Note

WASSER UND ROSEN (1997) took a point of departure in my work “Isternia” (1980, for cimbalon, or marimba) inspired by the loving atmosphere and the narrow streets of a Greek village of that name on the island of Tinos. The work for two guitars – with the same harmonious spirit - has its title from a line in a sonnet by Rainer M. Rilke (“Singe die Gärten, mein Herz, die du nicht kennst”), with associations to the bright and sensuous sides of life, a poem reminding us of celebrating among other things “gardens that we do not know yet”.

The resonance of the two guitars inspired me, especially in the second movement, and intensive duo play between the two instruments.

The two sections of the piece - in one continuous flow - bring a kind of inner peace and balance, not without tension but always springing from a source of happiness and the joy of life.
