Programme Note
4 Marimbas belongs to a group of pieces which in some way were derived from 7 Flutes, a virtuoso piece for 7 flutes based primarily on descending canonic structures, which I wrote in 2014. Indeed moments of 4 Marimbas, which is one of the largest of these later pieces include 7-part canons, making it particularly difficult.
I found the use of canons particularly productive. To a greater or lesser extent I used them in my 4th Piano Concerto (2014), 7 Bass Winds (2015), String Quartet No 12 (2015), perc:piano 2 (Reflets dans l’oeil) (2017), cello:piano 2 (2017) and six pianos:seven canons (2018).
The piece is dedicated to Gill Graham.
I am particularly indebted to the Colin Currie Quartet for taking up this difficult piece and giving it so many outings.
