Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, on October 5 the Los Angeles Philharmonic's annual gala concert pays homage to Frank Gehry, a long-time friend of the LA Phil and architect behind the iconic downtown LA venue. Included in the programme is a new choreography by Lucinda Childs to Fog by Esa-Pekka Salonen, originally written as a 90th birthday tribute to Gehry. Fog is a fantasy around the Bach E Major Prelude for violin (BWV 1006) which is performed attacca into Fog. The Bach was the first piece Salonen and Gehry heard in the then-still-under-construction Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Honouring Gehry’s iconoclasm with performances by iconoclasts in their own fields, the evening’s programme will journey from Walt Disney Concert Hall’s storied beginnings to the architect’s oceanic inspirations, immortalised in the building’s steel sails and sense of movement. Gehry’s love of the sea, orchestral music, and jazz will then combine into offerings from LA Phil Creative Chair for Jazz Herbie Hancock, GRAMMY award-winning R&B singer H.E.R., and LA Phil Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, who will conclude the programme with Debussy’s La mer.
